UAP 5624: Urban Design Seminar: Theory of Urban Form for Planning
Every Monday in June and July, 7:00 – 9:30 pm

3 credit hours

This course acquaints planning students with the theory of urban form as applied to planning. Recommended especially for students in urban design, land use planning, and development specializations but all students will benefit. The instructor teaches a version of this course for architecture students.

UAP 5624: Urban Design Seminar: Urban Design for Planners
Every Friday in June and July, 4:00 – 8:30 pm

3 credit hours

This course provides planners with a foundation in urban design principles with basic instruction in urban design enabling planners to be conversant with urban design issues relevant to planning. The instructor’s students have won planning awards based in part on his instruction.

This course introduces students to methods of estimating future residential development demand. Recommended especially for students in economic development, land use planning, and real estate development specializations. The instructor is Director of Economic Development for Arlington Coounty.

UAP 5424: Metropolitan Planning Topics: Tysons Corner – The 21st Century Suburban Downtown
Friday, June 9, 5:00 – 9:00 lecture and Saturday, June 10, 9:00 – 4:00, field trip with lectures.

This course will review the role of Tysons Corner as the nation’s best-known “edge city” and how it is being transformed into a 21st century urban center. The instructor is a national expert in Tysons Corner and edge cities.

UAP 5424: Metropolitan Planning Topics: Introduction to Qualitative Analysis
June 26, 27 and 28, 7:00 – 9:30 plus supplemental on-line studies

1 credit hour

Planners are often confronted with assessing proposals that are qualitative in nature. This course introduces planners to qualitative assessment methods in a professional planning context.

UAP 5624: Urban Design Seminar: Mainstreet Planning, Design, and Revitalization
Tuesdays, July 11, 18 and 25, 4:15 – 6:45 pm, plus one Saturday field trip TBA.

This course will introduce students to maintstreet planning and design issues, and the role of mainstreets in meeting development needs of the 21st century. The instructor is a former senior official with the Mainstreet program.

UAP 5464: Urban Design Seminar: Creative Cities
All Wednesdays in July 4:15 – 6:45 pm

1 credit hour

This course explores the current debate about the “creative city” and the “creative economy” and examines case studies of how governments have tried to promote these concepts through public policy, in the US and internationally.
