Students taking this course do not qualify for taking the Virginia real estate examination. This course reviews real estate concepts and principles, includes pro forma and discounted cash flow analysis, and evaluates the effectiveness of public finance tools to leverage private real estate development.

These courses will be combined into one course experimentally in fall 2006 and spring 2007. Students needing both courses need to sign up for both UAP 5114 and UAP 5224. Students needing just GIS and not methods should take UAP 5114 Tuesdays. Students who need just methods will be accommodated in the Monday combined course by signing up for just UAP 5224. Because of computer lab limits, the fall class is limited to 20 students but the course will be offered again in the spring. Additional lab sessions TBA.

UAP 5124: Urban and Regional Planning Studio (3 credits) & UAP 5774: Economic Development Studio (3 credits)

This studio will develop strategies to connect urban and rural economies. With students in Blacksburg, we will work for Arlington County and the City of Martinsville to develop a framework whereby the two communities can be linked. Students must have taken UAP 5234: Urban Economy and Public Policy to enroll. Students can choose which studio to sign up for. Students needing to meet the core studio requirement may wish to sign up for UAP 5124. Students who have already taken UAP 5124 or plan to in the future may choose to sign up for UAP 5774.

  • 9/6 (Robert Lang and Chris Nelson will roll out their theory, maps, and data for "megapolitan America" to be filmed for broad distribution nationally);
  • 10/4 (John Randolph will deliver his Dale Prize lecture for his contribution to environmental scholarship);
  • 11/1 (Marie Howland, U of Maryland professor, has been invited to speak on emerging economic development themes);
  • 12/6 (William Millar, President of the American Public Transportation Association will complete the seminar series with his perspective on the future of US public transit)
